Our next destination was San Jose, California. While it is possible to drive from Las Vegas to all the way up there, we decided to make a stop in Bakersfield and drive to San Jose the next day. This trip brought us across rural California and it is really pretty.
In San Jose, we had one goal. And that was see the Pittsburgh Penguins win. Well… now a few months in the future I can tell you that that did not happen. But we did see the Pittsburgh Penguins play. As we were in San Jose, the opponent were the San Jose Sharks. Now usually when you run into Johanna, Mary and I at a hockey games you will find us cheer for sharks and against penguins. But that is only in DEL hockey. In the NHL, tables are turned. So after enjoying the California heat, we threw on Pens jerseys and headed to the rink.
One funny anecdote: at some point during the game, the guy sitting next to Mary asked if we know this girl Amber… She has been a good friend of mine for a few years now. Turns out they are pretty good friends (by now housemates)… so we tried calling her on FaceTime… I mean what are the odds? but that didn’t work so we ended up sending her selfie. Thinking back, I still have to laugh about it. The chance to sit next to someone that know a friend of yours in an 18k rink are small… realizing that you know the same person is even smaller.
Unfortunately, as mentioned above, the pens lost this game too. On the way back to our hotel we decided to get pizza and drove past Mario Lemieux. Like you do every day….
